With Commentary on Context and Impact

In 2006, Brown released its groundbreaking Report of the Brown University Steering Committee on Slavery and Justice, confronting and publicly documenting the University’s complex history with the transatlantic slave trade and its legacies of inequity and injustice. Brown was among the first institutions of higher education in the United States to publicly catalogue its ties to racial slavery, sparking a national discussion and inspiring similar reckonings at more than 100 other colleges and universities.

Fifteen years later — amid a national reckoning with anti-Black racism, a COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately affecting communities of color, and persisting disparities facing Black people — the University releases the second edition. Rather than replacing the original report, the second edition expands upon it with new perspectives from faculty, staff and alumni who reflect on the enduring legacy of the report, its ongoing impact on public conversation and scholarship, and its role in catalyzing new diversity, equity and inclusion goals at the University.
